Why ‘On The Fly?
Because most of my Trips will be spontaneous, impromptu, and unplanned.
What is a big year?
If you are just someone who knows me and is not familiar with birding, you might be asking yourself : What is a BIG YEAR
A Big Year is an informal competition among birders. It is a competition to find out who can see or hear the most species of birds. In 2012, I will be doing my big year in the lower 48 continental U.S. states.

My name is Hilary Sullivan. I am 22 years old and very passionate about nature. I love spending time outside, I love birds, and I wanted to do a big year because if not now, then when? I am very excited to learn a huge amount about birds and myself in 2012.
Why do I have an advantage?
My wonderful mother was a flight attendant and retired after 26 years working for US Airways. Fortunately for me, this means that I am able to fly for free (on standby) anywhere that this airline flies. This of course, decreases the amount of money that I need to spend. I only have this perk until I am 23 so I am using it while I can.
Why am I the underdog?
I am fairly young and relatively new to birding. I only got into birding in the last few years. I will of course, be documenting the whole experience with my wonderful Nikon P500.
